Foundations of a Free Society

In this short, accessible primer, Eamonn Butler explains the institutions of free societies, and how free societies work to promote wealth and equality, without conscious control by politicians. Designed mainly for those who do not live in free societies and have little experience of them, it shows that people do not get rich by making others poorer, but by helping others through production and exchange. In this, the poor benefit most. The free society, he observes, is a spontaneous society: government has a very limited role, and rather than regulating people’s activities, should give them freedom to try new ideas. As more and more countries liberalise their institutions and open up to free trade, the lives world’s poorest people have been transformed for the better.
